How to do a web domain search

Before registering a domain name you have to carry out a web domain search to find out if the name (or names) you have in mind are available. Although you may think the web address you've come up with is unique and never been done before, you'd be surprised how many domains have already been taken. Create a list of several choices before you start the registration process.

Searching for a web domain is easy - and there's more than one way to do it. The first method involves consulting the Whois directory online. Just do an Internet search for this term and you should be able to find it without trouble. When you enter a domain name into the Whois search engine, the information regarding ownership and registrar will pop up, if it's registered. This service is free and simple to use.

If you prefer a different method, do a web domain search through the registrar from which you plan to purchase the domain name. This is even easier than using the Whois directory because the search is integrated into the registration page. Type in as many domains as you want until an available one turns up. The only downside is that the only information the search gives you is related to availability - if you want to know more about domains and their owners, the Whois database is the only source that provides such details.

If you want to quickly check a domain's availability, type the address you have in mind into your browser to see if anything shows up. If the domain name is in use, you may have the chance to view a completed website or an 'under construction' page. Either way, you'll know if the particular domain you want is available or not. Of course, if someone has registered the domain without purchasing hosting or domain parking, nothing will load in your browser, even though the domain has been purchased.

Searching for a web domain is not a difficult endeavor – each method is effective and easy to do, even if you've never done a web domain search in your life.
