What does a domain registrar do?
Every time you register a domain name, it's done through a domain registrar.
Most web hosting companies offer domain registration services for a fee, or you can purchase a domain on its own without signing up for a hosting plan. But no matter what route you take, you always have to register through a third party when it comes to domain names - it's not possible to do it on your own.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) handles all domain name assignments. This private, non-profit organization was created in 1998 for the express purpose of organizing the use of all domain names on the Internet. It is through ICANN that a domain name registrar is authorized to dole out domain names and assign ownership to the individuals who sign up through their sites. If you're concerned about a specific domain name registrar, conduct an Internet search for a list of ICANN accredited registrars to see if the company you want to register with is there.
This is how it works - a domain registrar has the power to register domain names for their customers, but their duties don't stop with registration. Once your domain has been registered, the company has a responsibility to watch over the domains that have been registered through them. Most registrars provide domain name registration for a small fee - prices vary depending on the company. Registration may come with free hosting, or as part of a package deal.
Even though registering a domain name is relatively straightforward, not all services offer the same quality of service - some registrars do better than others so it pays to conduct a bit of research before making a commitment. A difference in price doesn't always mean a difference in service so take your time and seek out a registrar you can trust.
A domain registrar that also provides hosting services may be exactly what you need for your website. Comparing hosting services, however, can be a little trickier than comparing simple domain registration, but if you do your homework it's possible to find a hosting company that won't let you down.
