How can I check domain name availability?

Checking domain name availability is fairly straightforward - there are several ways to research domain names. Each method only takes a few minutes and won't cost you a cent. It can be difficult to come up with a good domain name for your website, and even harder to find something that hasn't already been taken, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. As long as you take the time to do some research, and you know where to go, you should be able to grab an excellent domain name.

The first method to check domain availability is something you can do independently. The Whois database contains information on all registered domain names - if you type a particular domain into the search engine, if it's been purchased a page will load containing all the details. If the Whois directory comes up with nothing for the name you've inputted - you're in luck! This means the domain hasn't been registered and you're free to get in touch with a registrar and make the purchase.

The second method to find out domain name availability is part of the domain registration process - if you visit any registrar online you can check domain availability instantly without having to sign up with an account or pay any fees. Simply follow the instructions for registering a domain - when you're asked to input the domain name in which you're interested, the search engine will come back with results pertaining to that particular site. If it's available for purchase you can go ahead with the registration.

You can even look up domain name availability by typing the web address into your browser and seeing what pops up. Someone may have purchased the site for the purpose of resale, in which case you can buy it directly from the domain's owner.

Another suggestion - go to an online domain auction site and search for domain names that have been put up for sale by the owners. Although prices may be higher in this type of venue, if you really want a specific domain name, the steeper price tag may be worth the extra expense.
